Reception Photography: Lighting, Timeline and Must-Have Shots

By the time the reception starts, the couple has been awake for eighteen hours. Guests are seated, the stage is lit, and everyone wants a photograph with the bride and groom. Without a plan, that queue never ends.

Fix the timeline first

Decide when the stage photographs begin and when they end, and put someone in charge of the queue. Twenty minutes of organised stage portraits, taken two families at a time, produces better photographs than two hours of free-for-all.

  • Couple portraits on the stage before the queue starts
  • Family groups in a fixed order, written on a card
  • Candid guest reactions during the speeches
  • The cake and the first dance, if you have them
  • A wide establishing frame of the full hall before guests stand up

Lighting the stage properly

Most reception stages are lit for the audience, not for the camera — strong coloured uplights and a bright backlit backdrop. We bring our own off-camera flash, gel or diffuse it to match the decor, and shoot at an angle that avoids the worst of the stage light.

A reception stage is designed to be seen, not photographed. Our job is to fix that without ruining the mood.

What we ask the family to do

Keep the stage free of bags and water bottles, ask the decorator to leave the side aisles clear, and give us five minutes alone with the couple before the guests arrive. Those five minutes produce the portrait you will actually frame.

Everything above is included in our standard reception coverage. Just tell us the venue and the timings.
